The idea of designing a
website about Persian music with emphasis on the Tombak
crossed my mind in 2004. As a
music student who had a bit of knowledge in web
designing, I decided to take advantage of this medium to
present my "favorite subject."
|
|
I was born in Tehran, Iran
in 1976. I began
my study of music with classical
piano when I was 10. I
became fascinated with the Tombak when
I was 18 and received formal instruction in this traditional
Persian drumming art with Master
Mahmoud
Farahmand for 2 years. I graduated from Tehran
University (Jahad
Daneshghahi) with a
music degree in 1999 and, after immigrating to the United States
in 2002, I continued to pursue music studies at the University
of Oregon.
|
|
In 2005 I was awarded a Diversity
Building Scholarship, which provided me
with the financial support and encouragement to undertake an
educational project about the music and culture of my native
country.
|
|
Developing a course of instruction and
designing and maintaining Persianmusic.8k.com
is my Senior Project for a Bachelor's Degree in the
School
of Music
at the University of Oregon, while it also allows me to share my passion for the Tombak
with the world.
|
|
What may be expected from this
website is a basic understanding of Tombak
playing for beginners. It
contains 60 exercises that feature 3
of the most basic strokes (“Tom,” “Bak,” and “Rast”).
|
|
These exercises are easy to
download and print (in PDF format) and are free to anyone
interested in knowing more about Persian drumming.
